Who are the Adivasis?

"Adivasi" means original people. They are India’s tribal communities who have lived in forests and hills for thousands of years. They are found in many states, like:

  • Jharkhand

  • Chhattisgarh

  • Odisha

  • Madhya Pradesh

  • Parts of North-East India

What Do They Wear?

Adivasi clothing is crafted from natural materials, such as goat hair and tree bark! Women adorn sarees in distinct styles, complemented by silver jewellery. Men traditionally wear dhotis and wrap-arounds, occasionally adorned with Ornaments.

Popular colours include scarlet red, yellow, green, black, and dark blue.

How are Adivasis exploited?

  • Land Loss: Displaced for mining, dams, and industries.
  • Low Wages: Paid less for hard labour.
  • Ignored Rights: Forest rights often denied.
  • Social Discrimination: Treated unfairly in society.
  • Poor Services: Limited access to education and healthcare

How do Adivasis impact the environment?

  • Adivasi communities have a positive and powerful impact on the environment. They live in forests and hills. They protect and care for nature instead of harming the nature.
  • Adivasis use natural resources carefully — they take only what they need and leave the rest for nature to grow back.
  • Even their art, music, and stories teach the importance of living peacefully with nature.
  • In today’s world of pollution and climate change, Adivasi communities are showing us how to live green, safe, and respectfully.
